Atreus
Accius, Atreus
also: oderint dum metuant
The tragedy Atreus by L. Accius (2nd c. BC), source of the tyrant-maxim oderint dum metuant ("let them hate, so they fear"), which Seneca brands an accursed verse.
Reading notes
- On Mercy §2.2 Let them hate, so they fear
A line from the tragedian Accius's Atreus (oderint dum metuant), a byword for tyranny that Seneca twice sets up as the antithesis of the clement ruler's voice.
